Our Indra Coil baskets are handmade by a collective of 160 women. Established by an NGO as a sustainable livelihood project, the organisation is focussed on supporting and providing women who previously depended upon seasonal labour in drought prone rural areas, with a supplementary income to farming, teaching them traditional Karnataka’s traditions and techniques.
“It is sometimes hard to really comprehend the amount of work that goes into a basket. Each piece of thread is handspun then stitched by hand around the coils, piece by piece.”
The craftswomen earn a living by crafting handspun, naturally dyed baskets and bags made from the natural fibres of jute, cotton, banana leaf and leather. This detailed handmade process means that the collective can only make a niche number of products per month, making the collections even more unique.
